CURRICULUM
WEEK 1: Welcome and Orientation
This first week is about getting you settled and ready for the journey ahead. During this session you will understand the agreements and norms related to this group, and how to get the most out of our next 12 weeks together. We’ll make sure you have access to all course materials and how to connect with Emmy for any issues that come up.
WEEK 2: Setting Your Intentions as an Empowered Parent
We’ll identify ways your strengths as a parent and what’s working well, as well as build out ways to support yourself in moments of stress. We will identify potential inner critics or “saboteurs” (from Positive Intelligence) that will get in the way and build awareness of how these show up in our daily lives and parenting. We’ll wrap with clear intention-setting.
WEEK 3: 10 Pillars of Transformation for Working Parents
We will walk through the Head, the Hands, and the Heart of empowered parenting and paint a clear picture of what empowered parenting looks like. We will explore our values and how to use them as our guide.
WEEK 4: Psychological Safety
Week 4 brings us to the exploration of generational patterns of connection and relational safety. How we relate to others, and how we relate to ourselves, and our children, is an inheritance – passed down from generations before us. In this week, we will name those patterns which we wish to discontinue and make a commitment for what it is to be moving forward.
WEEK 5: Nervous System Science for Parents
The physiology of relationships broadly and parenting specifically is undergoing huge leaps in scientific understanding. Having a strong grasp of our internal world as parents, and the internal worlds of our children, is a fundamental part of building strong relationships. With this understanding, comes the ability to access calm. With practice, comes internal safety for ourselves. This week we will learn the ins and outs of our nervous system so we can support our own and the nervous systems of those around us.
WEEK 6: Making Sense of Mindsight and Brain Science
Neuroscience is fundamentally altering our understanding of the human mind. This week we go deep into mindset and how our thoughts expand you, root you, and connect you to self — and the possibility of self compassion. Without self compassion, we cannot conquer our saboteurs or tap into empathy. During this week, we will explore the neurology of empathy and compassion and how parents are literally their children’s brain sculptors.
WEEK 7: The Power of Emotional Intelligence
The heart of becoming an empowered parent is understanding how our physiology, brain, and emotions work together to create our inner orchestra. Understanding emotional intelligence provides parents with a set of skills that has the potential to deepen the relationship they have with their children. For parents who were raised in emotionally immature households, the power of this self knowledge can be life-changing.
WEEK 8: Empowered Conversations
Through connection, relational safety, and presence, we practice how to engage in empowered conversations which go far beyond the superficial to dig into what is really going on in a relationship or a dynamic. This work is inspired by the Dr. Marshall Rosenberg’s non-violent communication approach.
WEEK 9: The PEACE Process
Here we combine everything you have learned so far into a way to engage with conflict. This process is highly effective in all forms of conflict within a parent/child dynamic, or between siblings, or really, any human! With the PEACE process, we review and practice the practical, actionable steps you need to find your way through disconnect, confusion, and overwhelm.
WEEK 10: Exploring Anger and Healthy Aggression
Anger is an emotion many parents are very familiar with, and it’s one that has much to teach us if we can engage with it in a healthy way. Emotional objectivity does not mean disconnecting from the emotion; rather it’s the ability to feel with healthy non-attachment and how to practice, and model, conflict resolution – whether at home or at the office.
WEEK 11: Playful Parenting and Storytelling
We will explore the playful inner self, so you can meet your children in theirs, no matter the age. We explore the twelve play languages, the four temperaments and the barriers that keep parents from playfulness, as well as strategies for transitioning from work to the home and using playfulness as a secret sauce to help.
WEEK 12: Your Personal Transformation
In our final week, we will come together in the spirit of celebration and reflection. We will reflect on the shifts you have made as you employ the knowledge you’ve attained through all your hard work over the past 11 weeks.. We’ll reflect on how your relationships with your children has shifted — what has changed? Is there more peace? Is there more joy? This week, we take a moment to look back and engage in deep appreciation.
