Frequently Asked Questions

common questions:

What is coaching?

Coaching is a collaborative process designed to support people to achieve their personal and professional goals. There are two important distinctions to note here:

  • Coaching is not therapy, which is a medical treatment delivered by a licensed practitioner, often focused on healing past wounds. In contrast, coaching is action-oriented and focused on future possibilities. The past informs, but it is not the primary orientation of, a coaching partnership.
  • Coaching is also not consulting, where the consultant gives advice or has specific deliverables. Coaching is a process where the coach serves as a strategic facilitator to support someone towards the changes they want to create in their life.

How is coaching different from talking to a friend?

While chats with people who are close to us can be helpful as we navigate life’s challenges, they are very different from the confidential, judgment-free space that dedicated coaching provides. Your coach brings an exceptionally objective, honest perspective, unencumbered by attachments or personal history with you. The agenda is entirely focused on your goals and priorities, with the coach serving as a strategic facilitator for you to chart a path forward. For those who are new to coaching, they are often surprised at how good it feels to just have someone actively listen, reflect, and support for a full 60 minutes. In our distracted world, this undivided attention is precious.

Who can benefit from coaching?

The most important ingredient for coaching to be successful is the willingness and motivation to change. Change is hard and uncomfortable. Yet it is only by navigating these uncharted waters that we can create a life that resonates more deeply with our values.

Are you feeling overwhelmed? Disconnected? Numb? Stuck? Resentful? Pissed off? Unhappy? Emotions are information in your body telling you that something is off. If these feelings are persistent, there may be a misalignment between your values and how you’re living right now. Coaching can support you to move out of that state and towards what you long for in your heart-of-hearts.

What types of coaching do you offer?

I specialize in coaching mid-career professionals and parents. We humans in ‘midlife’ (yes, me too!) are no longer young, but not yet old, and usually navigating some pretty intense pressures professionally and personally. My services include one-on-one coaching sessions, group coaching programs, and other resources that draw from timeless truths and modern neuroscience to navigate your midlife journey.

What is your coaching philosophy?

My coaching philosophy is rooted in the belief that each human being has the resources, wisdom and strength to create a thriving life – it’s my role as your coach to support you to discover them. I believe deeply in our common humanity. I take great inspiration and solace from ancient philosophies such as Buddhism, Stoicism, Daoism, and many of the world’s most popular religions and find it comforting to know that despite huge technological progress, humans have suffered similar challenges for thousands of years. It’s also so exciting to see research in neuroscience and other cognate disciplines explore the rich territories of the human condition. We’re all in this together, and we can all get better, together.

What is your one-on-one coaching process?

My approach is grounded in authenticity and compassion, and as your coach I will serve as your strategic facilitator towards creating the change you want in your life. Expect open dialogue, lots of questions, and exploration of your inner world, especially towards the beginning of our partnership. Ultimately this will also get paired with planning and action – the nuts and bolts of running experiments in your life. What this looks like practically is co-development of very practical strategies and memorable tactics tailored to your unique situation that get you moving.

How long do coaching sessions last, and how many sessions will I need?

How can I ensure we’re a good fit?

I offer a free 30-minute discovery call for prospective clients. This session is an opportunity for us to connect, discuss your needs, and explore how my coaching can support you on your journey. It’s a no-pressure way to see if we’re a good fit for working together and if you’re on the fence, I encourage you to book and see where the conversation takes us.

How do I measure progress in coaching?

Progress in coaching can be measured in a myriad of ways, but some of the more common ones are through your personal insights, shifts in mindset, and the actions you take toward your goals. We will regularly reflect on your experiences, celebrate your successes, and adjust our approach as needed to ensure you feel empowered and supported throughout the journey. All of our coaching sessions are documented, which means you can always refer back to what we discussed before and see the progress you’ve made.

What is your group coaching process?

Group coaching is a great way to access coaching at a rate that is more affordable to each participant. There’s also the benefit that you’ll learn from others’ experiences and share a sense of solidarity with and support from your cohort. I offer group coaching semi-regularly for specific topics, such as shifting parenting styles, leveling up management skills, navigating gender and cultural dynamics, setting better boundaries, etc. Subscribe to my email list to get updates on when these are offered.

What are your rates and payment options?

For 1-on-1 coaching, sessions run up to 60 minutes in length and are conducted online. 1-on-1 clients also get access to a private messaging portal where we share session notes, action items, and exchange updates and resources in-between sessions.

My current rates are as follows:
> Bi-monthly coaching: ¥30,0000 ($200USD) + Tax / month
> Weekly coaching: ¥60,000 ($400USD) + Tax / month
